Circulation Flow Rate:

The total quantity of hot water entering the cooling tower measured in either m3/hr or gpm. It is the circulating water being used in the cooling circuit to cool down or remove excessive heat from a process whether directly or indirectly. For example, in the quenching of products to achieve the final product quality, or plants and machinery, waste heat is generated and has to be removed in order to allow efficient operation; and also in cooling water from the heat exchanger or condenser so that heat can be rejected to the atmosphere more efficiently.

Inlet or Hot Water Temperature:

The final temperature of the circulating water entering the cooling tower distribution system measured either in oC or oF. This very basic and important parameter has to be determined prior to deciding the type and size of cooling tower. This aspect has often been neglected by many when they size the cooling tower because the more accurate figure is not readily available. As a result, cooling towers are being sized based on the total cooling capacity of the cooling tower matching the total heat rejection capacity. While to a certain extent this method do provide a rough estimation, the resulting flow rate however, could possibly turn out to be too small for cooling tower operation as some cooling towers require a minimum flow rate to operate the distribution system. A more serious situation would be the entering hot water temperature being too high for the construction materials of cooling tower components to withstand. An example would be the maximum operating temperature of PVC materials most widely used for the fill media, it can only tolerate up to 55oC.

Outlet or Cold Water Temperature:

The final temperature of the circulating water entering the cooling tower cold water basin before the addition of make-up water or removal of blowdown measured in either oC or oF. This is another very important parameter in deciding the cooling tower required. The function of a cooling tower is to provide cold water required by the products, plant, machinery, heat exchanger, condenser and so on. The minimum temperature of cold water is therefore specifically expected to determine whether the final overall efficiency of the plant or the quality of the products has been achieved. But unfortunately in many instances, cooling tower operating without achieving the cold water temperature required is a very common hidden problem in this industry.

Wet Bulb Temperature:

The temperature indicated by a psychrometer. Also known as the thermodynamic wet-bulb temperature of the temperature of adiabatic saturation measured in either oC or oF. This parameter determines the ambient air properties such as the enthalpy, air density and air specific volume, which is vital to the design or selection of the correct tower size. As wet bulb temperature varies with the weather condition in different location in the world, a similar cooling tower would not be necessarily providing the similar capacity for the similar application if the wet bulb temperature is different.
